Your Business Performs at the Height of Its Weakest Part

Product, marketing, sales, operations, finance, people. You are not as good as your best one. You are as good as your worst.

Every business runs on six things.

Product. What you actually sell, and whether it is good enough that someone would choose it again.

Marketing. How people find out you exist.

Sales. The conversation that turns interest into money.

Operations. How the thing actually gets made and delivered, every day, without you standing over it.

Finance. Not making money. Managing it. Those are two different skills and most founders only have the first.

People. Who you hire, how you treat them, and whether they stay.

Why this matters more than it sounds

Here is the thing people get wrong. They assume a business performs at the level of its strongest pillar. The great product carries the weak operations. The brilliant marketing makes up for the sales that nobody trained.

It does not work that way. The business performs at the height of its weakest pillar, not its strongest.

A restaurant with extraordinary food and a broken kitchen is a restaurant with long waits and cold plates. Customers do not experience your best part. They experience the whole thing, and the worst part is the one they tell people about.

The uncomfortable exercise

Score yourself out of ten on each of the six. Right now, as they are, not as you intend them to be.

Most founders can do this in two minutes and most already know their answer before they start. The lowest number is almost never a surprise. It is usually the thing you have been avoiding for months, for the very good reason that it is the part you are worst at and enjoy least.

That is not a coincidence. The weak pillar is weak because you are avoiding it, and you are avoiding it because it is not the part you came here to do.

What to do about it

You have three options, and only three.

Learn it. Slow, but it compounds and nobody can take it from you.

Hire it. Faster, more expensive, and you still need to understand it well enough to judge whether the person is doing it properly.

Design around it. Genuinely legitimate. Build a business that does not depend heavily on the thing you are worst at.

What you cannot do is keep improving the pillar you are already good at and hope it compensates. It will not. You will simply have one very tall pillar and a business that still performs at the height of the short one.
